This summer John and I have a ton of things we want to accomplish.  Just saying that makes me want to hang out on the couch or sit in front of the AC in our bedroom.  Not even kidding.  But then I think about all of those months where I walked in the rain and snow, just to get to these precious few weekends of sunshine and I find my resolve.

This weekend, it was heading to the Big Apple BBQ Festival in NYC.  We were surrounded by huge smokers and some of the best pitmasters in the country around Madison Square Park.  It was absolutely insane and as you know, John and I always enjoy BBQ festivals!  We couldn’t just stop at one place, right?  So, we ate our way around the streets, stopping only to partake in free giveaways.  You know how I roll.

We ended up at Salt Lick BBQ; they are from Texas and while I can say nothing about their restaurant or food there, I can say this stand was our absolute favorite.  Which, once I tell you what they were offering won’t be a surprise – Beef Brisket and Smoked Sausage Platter.  HELLO?!  But what stole the show for me was the delicious slaw they put on the side.  Salt Lick Slaw was an instant favorite and the moment I got home, hopped online to see if I could find myself a recipe.  Lucky for everyone, I did.  If you’re looking for something different, something to spice up your summer, this slaw is it.
Salt Lick Slaw (adapted from Salt Lick BBQ Cookbook)
Serves:  6
1 head cabbage, shredded
2 carrots, peeled and shredded
1/2 cup white vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon white pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted

Combine cabbage and carrots in a large bowl.  In a small bowl, combine white vinegar, sugar, salt, white pepper, vegetable oil, celery seed, and toasted sesame seeds.  Toss with cabbage mixture and serve immediately.

  1. We are huge cole slaw fans! This will definitely get made in my house! Sounds like you're doing the opposite of me! I pretty much hibernate for most of the summer. Enjoy all those festivals and outings you have planned!

  2. The BBQ festival must have been so fun. I have the salt lick cookbook that my brother bought me when he was in TX. I'll have to try this slaw.
